05-30-2014 Final Run #RunScoutmasterRun

Completed the final run this morning! 100 miles ran in 60 days! Thank you to Observepoint, EdgeCreek Properties, and Utah Vinyl Pools for sponsoring this run. It's not too late to still donate to Troop 61! Any dollar amount is greatly accepted.  I am looking forward to the next fundraising run that I can help with... but for now this Scoutmaster is going to go take a nap!

Positive Attitude Scoutmasters Minute

A good positive attitude can truly change the way you approach life, and your future. Let me illustrate with a short story.

A few years ago, there was a wildlife organization out west that offered a bounty of $5000 for wolves captured alive.
Two friends, Sam and Jed, decided to make their fortune. Day and night, they scoured the mountains and forests looking for their valuable prey.
Exhausted one night, they fell asleep dreaming of their potential fortune.
Suddenly, Sam woke up a bit startled, and saw that they were surrounded by a huge pack of nearly 70 wolves with searing black eyes, and bared teeth. Low growls rumbling from their throats.

He slowly reached over and nudged his friend and said 'Jed, wake up! I think we're rich!'

Gentlemen, Sam had a positive attitude. I hope you do.

Only 8 miles left of the challenge!

Fishing Secret Skit

Required:
4 or 5 scouts
Script:
3 or 4 scouts in a group, all fishing and not catching anything. 1 other scout walks onstage, waves to them and they wave back. He sits aways away and starts fishing. He catches a fish and repeats it a few times.

One scout gets up and walks over to the scout that is catching fish.
Scout #1: I've been here fishing all day and haven't caught anything. You've almost caught your limit already. What's your secret?
Fish Scout : mumble mumble with mouth closed.
Scout #1: What did you say?
Fish Scout : mumble mumble with mouth closed.
Scout #1: Oh never mind! (walks back to buddies)
Scout #1: He's kinda strange. I couldn't understand him.

Repeat with each scout asking his secret until the last scout tries.
Last Scout : We've been here all day and haven't caught anything. What's your secret?
Fish Scout : mumble mumble with mouth closed.
Last Scout : What?
Fish Scout : mumble mumble with mouth closed.
Last Scout : Oh, come on. You can tell me, buddy! (and gives him a slap on the back which causes the scout to take a big hard swallow and look kind of sick.)
Fish Scout : I said - 'You have to keep the worms warm!'

Tenderfoot Award Ceremony

Leader: I now call ________ and his parents to come forward. (Repeat for each tenderfoot scout)

Leader: These scouts have completed the requirements for the rank of Tenderfoot.

Leader: Since you first joined this Troop, you have said the words of the Scout Oath many times. You have learned many skills which will serve you well as you travel on your boy scout trail to become an Eagle Scout. You have learned some basic first aid skills and to tie knots and you have improved your physical fitness. But these skills are only the beginning. As you advance into other ranks, you will learn more knots, more first aid skills, how to use a compass, how to cook, and most importantly how to lead others. The activities you participate in will become more challenging and more rewarding.

When you passed your Board of Review, you became a Tenderfoot scout. I now present to you your rank advancement card which documents this achievement. Keep this cards, and all other cards you receive in Scouting, in a safe place. As you advance in Scouting, these are very important in documenting your achievements. When you submit your Eagle application or if you move to a new location, you will need these cards.

I am also presenting you with your Tenderfoot badge. This announces to the world that you have reached the first advancement level in Boy Scouts and you are on your way along the path of scouting.

Finally, you are given a small pin to pass on to your parent as a keepsake of this step you've taken towards becoming an independent young man, able to take care of himself and help others.

(Pass out badges, pins, and cards. Give scout handsake to each scout.)

Leader: Troop ____, please stand.

Leader: Troop, join me in congratulating these fine scouts on their advancement to Tenderfoot rank! (lead applause)
