Flour Clay Recipe

This clay works great for completing requirement #7 of the Webelos Artist activity badge.
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • food coloring
Mix all ingredients, adding food coloring last. Stir over medium heat until smooth. Remove from pan and knead until blended smooth. Place in plastic bag or airtight container when cooled. Will last for a long time.

Hike to the Y

Great day hike. From 900 East in Provo turn onto 820 North.  The road will veer to the left and turn into Oakmont Ln. Turn right onto Oak Cliff Dr.  and finally a right turn onto Terrace Dr.  There is plenty of parking and a restroom just north of the Trailhead. The trail is well groomed and is a great workout as you take the switchbacks up 1.4 miles.  There are benches on the corner of each switchback if you feel like you need a rest. If taking younger ones, keep a close eye on them at the top of the Y.  The Y is smooth and steep and would cause some damage if you or your Cub Scout slipped and fell.  The trail is well traveled and very busy on Saturdays.

Fingerprinting Merit Badge Requirement 4b.

Take a clear set of prints using ONE of the following methods
  1. Make both rolled and plain impressions. Make these on an 8-by-8-inch fingerprint identification card, available from your local police department or your counselor.
  2. Using clear adhesive tape, a pencil, and plain paper, record your own fingerprints or those of another person.

In the box marked "Pencil Lead Box" place the pencil so that the lead is on its side and fill the area completely with the pencil.  With each finger tip, rub within the pencil lead box and then roll your print onto the sticky side of a piece of tape.  Your fingerprint should be showing on the tape now. Place the print within the respective finger box.  Do this for all ten of your digits.

Working on Cub Scout Chess Belt Loop

Monday was the first day of Spring Break for my son.  The question came up, "What are we going to do for a week?"

Solution: Belt Loops!

Last night we completed the Chess Belt Loop.

Requirement 1. Chess Pieces and Movements:
  • The king moves one square in any direction. The king has also a special move which is called castling and involves also moving a rook.
  • The rook can move any number of squares along any rank or file, but may not leap over other pieces. Along with the king, the rook is involved during the king's castling move.
  • The bishop can move any number of squares diagonally, but may not leap over other pieces.
  • The queen combines the power of the rook and bishop and can move any number of squares along rank, file, or diagonal, but it may not leap over other pieces.
  • The knight moves to any of the closest squares that are not on the same rank, file, or diagonal, thus the move forms an "L"-shape: two squares vertically and one square horizontally, or two squares horizontally and one square vertically. The knight is the only piece that can leap over other pieces.
  • The pawn may move forward to the unoccupied square immediately in front of it on the same file; or on its first move it may advance two squares along the same file provided both squares are unoccupied; or it may move to a square occupied by an opponent's piece which is diagonally in front of it on an adjacent file, capturing that piece. The pawn has two special moves: the en passant capture and pawn promotion.
