Landscape Architecture Merit Badge


LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

  1. Go to a completed landscape project that a landscape architect has designed. Before you visit the site, obtain a plan of the design from the landscape architect if one is available.
  2. After completing requirement 1, discuss the following with your merit badge counselor:
    1. Tell whether the design had separate spaces, a clear path system, and sun and shade variety.
    2. Discuss how the designated seating, eating, or parking areas suited the overall design.
    3. Explain how the design reflected consideration for the comfort, shelter, and security of the users.
    4. Discuss how the choice of trees, shrubs, and ground covers used in the project contributed to its appeal and function.

Kayaking Merit Badge

KAYAKING


  1. Do the following:
    1. Explain to your counselor the hazards you are most likely to encounter while participating in kayaking activities, including weather and water-related hazards, and what you should do to anticipate, help prevent, mitigate, and respond to these hazards.
    2. Review prevention, symptoms, and first-aid treatment for the following injuries or illnesses that can occur while kayaking: blisters, cold-water shock and hypothermia, heat-related illnesses, dehydration, sunburn, sprains, and strains.

Journalism Merit Badge

JOURNALISM


  1. Explain what freedom of the press is and how the First Amendment guarantees that you can voice your opinion. In your discussion, tell how to distinguish between fact and opinion, and explain the terms libel, slander, defamation, fair comment and criticism, public figure, privacy, and malice. Discuss how these matters relate to ethics in journalism.

  1. In your own words, define inventing. Then do the following:
    1. Explain to your merit badge counselor the role of inventors and their inventions in the economic development of the United States.

    1. Identify and interview with a buddy (and with your parent's permission and merit badge counselor's approval) an individual in your community who has invented a useful item. Report what you learned to your counselor.
    2. Read about three inventors. Select the one you find most interesting and tell your counselor what you learned.

  1. Give the history of one American Indian tribe, group, or nation that lives or has lived near you. Visit it, if possible. Tell about traditional dwellings, way of life, tribal government, religious beliefs, family and clan relationships, language, clothing styles, arts and crafts, food preparation, means of getting around, games, customs in warfare, where members of the group now live, and how they live.

Horsemanship Merit Badge

HORSEMANSHIP
  1. Do the following:
    1. Describe the safety precautions you should take when handling and caring for a horse.
    2. Describe the fire safety precautions you should take in a barn and around horses.
  2. Name the 15 main parts of a horse.
  3. Name four leading breeds of horses. Explain the special features for which each breed is known.

Grotto Hike - Payson Canyon

Fun and easy hike up Payson Canyon to take the Cub Scouts or Family on.  The hike in and out is a total of .60 of a mile.  Take your swimming suits, a towel, and a lunch and have fun.  There are no bathroom facilities at the trail-head or at the grotto.

Home Repairs Merit Badge

HOME REPAIRS
  1. Discuss general precautions related to home repairs. Name at least 10 safe practices that every home repairer should exercise.
  2. Under the supervision of your merit badge counselor, do FOUR of the following:
    1. Maintain or recondition a yard tool and show that you know how to clean up and properly store this equipment.

Earn the Citizenship belt loop and complete five of the following requirements:
  1. Interview someone who has become a naturalized citizen. Give a report of your interview to your den or family.
  2. Write a letter to your newspaper about an issue that concerns you. Send your letter by mail or e-mail.
  3. Create a collage about America.

  1. Develop a list of jobs you can do around the home. Chart your progress for one week.
  2. Make a poster showing things that you can do to be a good citizen.

Graphic Arts Merit Badge

GRAPHIC ARTS

  1. Review with your counselor the processes for producing printed communications: offset lithography, screen printing, electronic/digital, relief, and gravure. Collect samples of three products, each one produced using a different printing process, or draw diagrams to help you with your description.
  2. Explain the differences between continuous tone, line, and halftone artwork. Describe how digital images can be created and/or stored in a computer.
  3. Design a printed piece (flier, T-shirt, program, form, etc.)

Golf Merit Badge

GOLF
  1. Discuss safety on the golf course. Show that you know first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while golfing, including heat reactions, dehydration, blisters, sprains, and strains.
  2. Study the USGA "Rules of Golf" now in use.
    1. Tell about the three categories of golf etiquette.
    2. Demonstrate that you understand the definitions of golf terms.
    3. Show that you understand the "Rules of Amateur Status."
  3. Tell about your understanding of the USGA system of handicapping.

Geology Merit Badge

GEOLOGY
  1. Define geology. Discuss how geologists learn about rock formations. In geology, explain why the study of the present is important to understanding the past.
  2. Pick three resources that can be extracted or mined from Earth for commercial use. Discuss with your counselor how each product is discovered and processed.

Geocaching Merit Badge


GEOCACHING
  1. Do the following:
    1. Explain to your counselor the most likely hazards you may encounter while participating in geocaching activities, and what you should do to anticipate, help prevent, mitigate, and respond to these hazards.
    2. Discuss first aid and prevention for the types of injuries or illnesses that could occur while participating in geocaching activities, including cuts, scrapes, snakebite, insect stings, tick bites, exposure to poisonous plants, heat and cold reactions (sunburn, heatstroke, heat exhaustion, hypothermia), and dehydration.
    3. Discuss how to properly plan an activity that uses GPS, including using the buddy system, sharing your plan with others, and considering the weather, route, and proper attire.

Genealogy Merit Badge

GENEALOGY
  1. Explain to your counselor what the words genealogy, ancestor, and descendantmean.
  2. Do ONE of the following:
    1. Create a time line for yourself or for a relative. Then write a short biography based on that time line.
    2. Keep a journal for six weeks. You must write in it at least once a week.

Gardening Merit Badge

GARDENING
  1. Do the following:
    1. Grow six vegetables, three from seeds and three from seedlings, through harvest.
    2. Grow six flowers, three from seeds and three from seedlings, through flowering.
  2. Give the food value of the following:
    1. Three root or tuber crops
    2. Three vegetables that bear above the ground
    3. Three fruits

Forestry Merit Badge

FORESTRY
  1. Prepare a field notebook, make a collection, and identify 15 species of trees, wild shrubs, or vines in a local forested area. Write a description in which you identify and discuss the following:
    1. The characteristics of leaf, twig, cone, or fruiting bodies
    2. The habitat in which these trees, shrubs, or vines are found
    3. The important ways each tree, shrub, or vine is used by humans or wildlife and whether the species is native or was introduced to the area. If it is not native, explain whether it is considered invasive or potentially invasive.

Fire Safety - Wild Fires

Currently there are 54 "Large Incidence" wildfires burning throughout the Nation.  Most are west of Texas.  As we go through the remainder of this summer there are a few precautions that we as scouts can take to be Fire Smart in the outdoors.  Check with the Forest Service in your area if camp fires are still permitted. If you are allowed to have a camp fire, the following are a few tips to follow.

    2. Draw a plan showing a well-equipped farm shop. Point out the shop's mandatory safety devices and features.

  1. Prepare an outline on what a family is and discuss this with your merit badge counselor. Tell why families are important to individuals and to society. Discuss how the actions of one member can affect other members.
  2. List several reasons why you are important to your family and discuss this with your parents or guardians and with your merit badge counselor.

  2. Define the following terms: population, community, ecosystem, biosphere, symbiosis, niche, habitat, conservation, threatened species, endangered species, extinction, pollution prevention, brownfield, ozone, watershed, airshed, nonpoint source, hybrid vehicle, fuel cell.

Entrepreneurship Merit Badge

ENTREPRENEURSHIP
  1. In your own words, define entrepreneurship. Explain to your merit badge counselor the role of the entrepreneur in the economy of the United States.
  2. Identify and interview an individual who has started his or her own business. Find out how the entrepreneur got the idea for the business and how the entrepreneur recognized it as a market opportunity. Find out how the entrepreneur raised the capital (money) to start the business. How well is the business doing? Report what you learn.

  1. Select a manufactured item in your home (such as a toy or an appliance) and, under adult supervision and with the approval of your counselor, investigate how and why it works as it does. Find out what sort of engineering activities were needed to create it. Discuss with your counselor what you learned and how you got the information.

Energy Merit Badge

ENERGY
  1. Do the following:
    1. Find an article on the use or conservation of energy. Discuss with your counselor what in the article was interesting to you, the questions it raises, and what ideas it addresses that you do not understand.
    2. After you have completed requirements 2 through 8, revisit the article you found for requirement 1a. Explain to your counselor what you have learned in completing the requirements that helps you better understand the article.

Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
  1. Earn the First Aid merit badge.
  2. Do the following:
    1. Discuss with your counselor the aspects of emergency preparedness:
      1. Prepare for emergency situations.
      2. Respond to emergency situations.
      3. Recover from emergency situations.
      4. Mitigate and prevent emergency situations.
        Include in your discussion the kinds of questions that are important to ask yourself as you consider each of these.

  1. Describe the safety precautions you must exercise when using, building, altering, or repairing electronic devices.
  2. Do the following:
    1. Draw a simple schematic diagram. It must show resistors, capacitors, and transistors or integrated circuits. Use the correct symbols. Label all parts.
    2. Tell the purpose of each part.

ELECTRICITY
  1. Demonstrate that you know how to respond to electrical emergencies by doing the following:
    1. Show how to rescue a person touching a live wire in the home.
    2. Show how to render first aid to a person who is unconscious from electrical shock.
    3. Show how to treat an electrical burn.
    4. Explain what to do in an electrical storm.
    5. Explain what to do in the event of an electrical fire.

Drafting Merit Badge

DRAFTING
  1. Format TWO sheets of drawing paper with proper borders and title blocks—one for your manual project (see requirement 2) and one for your lettering project (see requirement 5).
    1. Make a rough sketch for each of your project drawings to determine the correct size of paper to format.
    2. Using either single-stroke vertical or slant Gothic lettering, fill in all important information in the title block sections of the formatted paper.
